We never knew 100% that our little Connie was in fact a girl until she was born! The doctors could only tell us that they thought our baby was a girl, because the sonograms never told pure truth. We went with it! Shane began to paint the room, put the chair railing up, put the brand new bed together, and much more. I had the showers that were covered with pink frilly dresses, the cutest shoes I'd ever seen, flowery bedroom attire, dolls, and more and more...the list just goes on!
I can remember soon after the room was finished, Shane and I would go and just lie down in the middle of the floor, look up at the ceiling, and say to one another, "It just feels good being in here. It's so peaceful."
January 19, 2006--Shane and I were getting ready to start our normal workday. While I was in the bathroom finishing my hair, I had an awful pain shoot through my stomach that lasted a few seconds. In order to not alarm him, I decided not to say anything. A few minutes passed and he went out to his car to heat it up and knock the frost off the windshield, this time I was in the kitchen and it happened again! I still didn't say anything. We both left and went our separate ways. I had to make a run to Walmart before heading to work, all the while I was in labor and didn't even realize it! I called my grandmother as I walked into work, who demanded that I call the doctor right away. I went to the doctor all to find out that I was not yet ready to have this baby, but if I went home and walked a while, then I could have a baby soon! This wasn't really what I wanted to hear! I went to see Shane at work, told him what happened, and he decided to take me home and WALK!!
We walked until I don't think I could go any further. That night, I was in so much pain, the contractions were coming every 2 minutes, and I was more ready than ever. We decided to go to the hospital around midnight. However, we didn't call anyone. When we stayed about an hour at the hospital, my contractions slowed down and the nurse suggested that this could be FALSE LABOR!! Again, this was not what I wanted to hear. Back home we went.
January 20, 2006--It was 7:01 and I woke out of my sleep to find out that my water had just broke! We left the house with much panic! Shane called all of the family members on the list, but when he called his mom, dad and sisters--THEY THOUGHT IT WAS A JOKE!! Of course they thought it was a joke, because January 20 was Shane's AND his dad's BIRTHDAY!! After convincing them that we were in fact on the way to the hospital to have our sweet girl, we landed ourselves behind a school bus...grrrrrrr!!! Now, that's a joke...when this baby is about to literally about to breathe her first breath and here we are driving down what's supposed to be a fast speed road at 25mph!!! It didn't last long...oh no...Shane was like a kid in a go cart on Christmas morning!! We passed that bus, ran a red light or two, until finally we turned in on what felt like two wheels in the hospital parking lot...we made it!
Soon after getting as settled as we could in the delivery room with our family by our side, Connie decided to come into this world before this mama could get the first thing that was requested...an epidural! There was zero time for that precious man made medication, because Connie was here only after about 2 minutes of pushing...Thank You Jesus!!!! She took her first breath and we heard her for the first time at 9;15 on that beautiful and cold Friday morning in January.
The next day, we brought Connie home, but this time Shane was more like a 90 year old man driving on a Sunday morning. She was so fragile and heaven sent that we didn't want to mess this up!! However, before nighttime really had set in good, we discovered what parenthood was really like...and the sweet little room that was once so peaceful...well, it wasn't so peaceful anymore. That little girl cried until she was about 4 months old! I can remember some nights when I was purely exhausted, Shane would take her downstairs, hold her tight in his arms, and instead of singing the sweetest little lullaby...he told her every part of her body--anatomically!! Don't you know, she is one brilliant girl even to this day!!
Our little Connie has always been an inquisitive, high level thinker who I do not have to worry whether she is going to pass her tests or do her homework; instead, I worry whether she will be disappointed if someone beats her on a test!! That's just who she is...my little Miss Perfect...and she always will be!!
